Welcome to a new school year!

Welcome to a new school year!

The Bacich PE blog will update monthly (or more) so check back often for new pictures and a glimpse of what we're playing.

During the first weeks of PE we we focus on getting to know each other, cooperation skills, and the rules for the ever-popular recess games Gaga, 4-Square, 2-Touch, and 4- Corners.
Our school theme for the year is ๐Ÿ’™Be Kind๐Ÿ’™. We are emphasizing the importance of being kind in PE. We talked about ways to model kindness within the structure of PE class. Some suggestions include:

  • invite someone to join your group
  • always say "yes" when someone asks to be your partner
  • give positive encouragement to students who are new to a particular sport or are apprehensive
  • cheer for everyone
  • help a friend who isn't sure how to play
To practice cooperation and being kind in PE we played a few fun games.

Musical Chairs, without "outs"! Plays similar to musical chairs in that you walk around the chairs while music plays and must find a seat when the music stops. What makes this version special is that nobody is ever out. If you see a classmate without a chair, invite that classmate to share your chair.
It begins like traditional musical chairs.
But as there are less and less chairs...
Students invite one another to share a chair!
So even if there are just 3 chairs left, nobody is "out".
Everybody works together...
And EVERYONE is included.

We also played a similar game with hula hoops. We danced to the music, and when the music stops, you must find your way into one of many hula hoops on the floor. Sharing is not only permitted, it is encouraged.

We all understand that sometimes there are disagreements. One person thinks the other is "out" and vice versa. Or two people both want to go first. Or whatever the issue, those disagreements take up playing time. To quickly solve such matters, students play rock/paper/scissors to work it out and get on with the fun!
